Welcome to the Landyacht section of the Varne
Boat Club.
We are small but growing section of the the club.
It may surprise you to learn that landyachts have been sailing on Greatstone
Beach for over 80 years.
Landyachting is a truly green sport, with no noise, pollution or site damage.
Whatever your interest in landyachting, we can help. If you are thinking of
taking up this sport, join one of our “come and try” days or contact
us for details of exciting training courses offered by our Federation, the British
Federation of sand and Landyacht Clubs.( BFSLYC).
If you would like to purchase your own yacht, then we can help find both new
and used machines. Through the BFSLYC we have links to landyachting resources
world-wide.
What kind of person takes up land yachting as a sport? Land yacht pilots come
from all walks of life. In the Landyacht section, we cover all age ranges with
previous members in the 70+ age group. This is a sport where both men and women
can excel.
The smaller class 5 yachts are fast but easy to handle. A lighter pilot may
gain extra speed, particularly on days when the wind is not very strong.
Heavier pilots will benefit when the wind is really blowing. Any weight difference
is much less important in the larger class 3 yachts.
You do not need to be strong to sail a land yacht, and people with minor disabilities
may be able to take this sport up.
To turn up on a cold windy beach early in the morning takes a certain amount
of enthusiasm, but you can be sure that you will receive a warm welcome from
the Landyacht Section.
