The track record for safety at the Varne
is second to none, however there are certain rules that we ask members
to adhere to, which would help us and help you in an emergency. The club also
hosts from time to time meetings and presentations on safety at sea.
Some basic safety rules.
- All members should carry flares, a spare anchor and
rope, some sort of communication device and life jackets
- It is a club rule that all craft and trailers be
marked with the V Numbers that were given to you when you join.
- If you are going out to sea any distance you must
chalk up your details and your destiantion and estimated time of return on
the message board and remove them when you return. This has helped in the
past with ascertaining if you are in trouble.
- There are 4 large yellow buoys on the beach and
it is not recommended to go past (pictured 1 and 2) opposite with the tractors/dumpers,
the mud can become particularly deep at certain times of the year and if you
sink one of them you are financially liable.
- If you do get stuck you can find equipment in the
Bosuns Hut (pictured bottom right) in the storage compound to help you get
out. If in doubt call for help. As and added benefit to the users of the boat
storage facility we have added lighting which is particularly useful in the
winter.
- Last of all the most important safety item
is watch your speed inshore and adhere
to the speed limit as marked on the slipway
